Vincent van Gogh Effio sokken

Vincent Seascape (1882)

In August 1882 Vincent van Gogh painted the beach and the North Sea at Scheveningen on a stormy day. The work comes from Van Gogh’s period in The Hague (1881-1883). The work shows the early painting style of Van Gogh, in which he already showed himself very idiosyncratic. This idiosyncrasy is reflected in this Effio sock, which follows the color structure of the painting in beautiful brown-grey tones.

He wrote to his brother Theo van Gogh about this painting: It was so beautiful these days at Schevening. Before that storm, the sea was almost even more imposing than when it was actually a storm. During the storm the waves were much less visible, and there was less of an effect than the furrows of a plowed land.
